Here’s how it works.
If a dropper holds 1mL of liquid, you can see that you’re getting 10mg of CBD with every full dropper (around 40 drops).
Low Potency CBD Oil (10% or Less CBD)
The first step is to do our calculation from above to determine how much CBD there is in mg/mL.
What does this mean? Well, let’s say we have a 600 mg CBD oil in a 15 mL bottle, and another 600 mg CBD oil in a 30 mL bottle, which one is stronger?
2000 mg of CBD in 30mL of oil will yield 66% CBD per mL. These products are thick and syrupy due to the high CBD concentration. They’re also referred to as concentrates because in order to make their manufacturers need to be extracted, and concentrated by removing other elements first. If you’re a first-time user, don’t start with high potency CBD oil.
It's also important to note that while the FDA has not evaluated these CBD products, most studies conclude that CBD is generally safe to consume. Still, it's always a good idea to check with your physician if you have a serious medical condition or take prescription medications before experimenting with a strong CBD oil.
By far the strongest CBD oil on our list is CBDistellery's 5,000 mg CBD oil. It's an excellent choice if your chronic pain requires higher doses—and the price is friendly, too. This seriously potent product is available in full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate, so you can enjoy your preference. CBDistillery also offers a very strong 2,500 mg CBD oil if 5,000 mg is too much.
Type: Full spectrum
How Much CBD Oil Is Too Much?
This process is crucial in finding the right CBD oil (and the right potency) for you, and it can help prevent unwanted side effects like nausea, fatigue, and irritability. These adverse reactions are not common, but some people do experience this type of discomfort if they take too much CBD.
Strength: 1,350 mg per 30 mL bottle (45 mg per 1 mL dropper)
The amount of CBD oil a person needs will depend entirely on the individual, as everyone responds differently. Factors like body weight, metabolism, body chemistry, and the target symptoms will all play a role in the effects felt from CBD.
Type: CBD isolate, broad-spectrum, and full-spectrum options available

This is a 10 milliliter bottle of CBD oil that contains 7.26 grams of cannabidiol in a 55 percent CBD distillate. Germinated hemp seed oil, this product’s carrier oil, adds even more CBD in addition to minor cannabinoids, terpenes and other hemp phytonutrients. Hempassion says germinated hemp seed oil is one of the most nutritionally balanced supplements currently known.

Sometimes, however, packages will tell you what percentage of CBD contained in the oil. This is where things can get confusing. A label may say that the CBD in the product is 99% pure if it contains a CBD isolate, or 70% if it contains a distillate. This tells you the strength of the CBD in the oil, but it doesn’t tell you how potent the CBD oil is by volume. And that means you won’t be able to tell how strong a dose is, so it’s important to find where the package indicates how much CBD it contains in milligrams.
Most of the time, labs like BelCosta use High Performance Liquid Chromatography ( HPLC ) to measure CBD oil strength. For the technically curious, the test produces a table of wavelengths that act as the chemical fingerprints of various cannabinoids. This allows lab technicians to identify which compounds a sample contains as well as their relative quantities.
Cannabidiol Life’s most potent offering is a perfect example of why it’s important to measure a CBD oil’s strength by volume. At 3,000 milligrams CBD, this whole plant hemp extract oil contains more cannabidiol than most products on the market. But its potency isn’t as extreme as it may appear. This is a 60 milliliter bottle, putting CBD potency at a humbler 50 mg/mL — therapeutically beneficial, but not chart-topping. Still, because Cannabidiol Life contains so much CBD, you can easily obtain 75–100 mg/mL doses, or higher, if required.
“When you’re talking about strength, you’re talking about potency,” explained Adie Rae , a science adviser to Weedmaps News and an academic researcher with a Ph.D. in neuroscience who has been studying cannabinoids since 2004. “And that means how much CBD per volume.”
