cbd comes from what plant

The principal cannabinoid receptors in humans are the CB1 and CB2 receptors. These help to maintain homeostasis within the body, and may help regulate functions relating to sleep, mood, immune activity, inflammation, pain management, and a multitude of other conditions.

There are two different types of trichomes: glandular and non-glandular trichomes. Non-glandular trichomes are also known as cystoliths.

What About THC?

CBD oil and CBD-based products have soared in popularity in recent years. The prevalence of these products has led many to seek out information about these cannabinoids, and to get a better understanding of them.

Many people mistakenly believe that hemp is the male version of marijuana, and that CBD is only found in these male plants. This is inaccurate on multiple levels.

There are several different extraction methods used to pull CBD from the raw cannabis plant material. The most commonly used extraction techniques are solvent-based methods. Here, solvents such as butane, propane, and ethanol (among others) are used to extract CBD from the plant material.

Cannabis buds and, to a lesser extent, leaves usually contain copious amounts of resin, while industrial plants contain significantly less. So it follows that marijuana offers a more abundant source of CBD than hemp. A much larger quantity of plant material is needed to extract the same amount of CBD oil from hemp as from marijuana.

Isolate vs. full-spectrum CBD

CBD isolate products are those which contain only the CBD molecule, with no accompanying terpenes, THC, or other cannabinoids. For patients with certain medical conditions, or those wishing to avoid THC, CBD isolate may be preferred. The alternatives to CBD isolate would be whole-plant CBD oil, full-spectrum CBD oil, or broad-spectrum CBD oil.

That being said, whether CBD is extracted from hemp or marijuana, it remains identical on a molecular level.

“I treat patients with both hemp and marijuana CBD products and I couldn’t say one is more effective than the other. I can concur that most of my patients find that having THC, even the 0.3% found in hemp-derived CBD products, is more effective than products with 0% THC,” Damas said.

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of at least 113 naturally-occurring compounds (‘phytocannabinoids’) found in the Cannabis Sativa L. plant. CBD is distinct from THC, the intoxicating compound that produces the famous high. Concerns over CBD arise from the confusion between Cannabis, Hemp and Marijuana. Hemp and Marijuana are both species of Cannabis, however Marijuana is bred to have high levels (25% in some cases) of THC- the substance associated with illegal highs. CBD is extracted from Hemp that contains less than 0.2% THC.

Which part of the plant does CBD come from?

About the shop

Amongst other cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenes, CBD is extracted from the flower of the cannabis plant to form a raw paste. This extract is then mixed with fatty carrier bases, such as hemp oil (produced from hemp seeds) or MCT (produced from Coconut), allowing it to be ingested.

A recent US report found a staggering 70% of the 300 top-selling CBD products were “highly contaminated” with heavy metals (e.g. lead, arsenic), herbicides (e.g glyphosate) and a host of other contaminants. The quality of CBD is hugely dependent on where it comes from and how is grown. In this short video we will cover the three important questions you need to know the answer to if you are thinking about trying CBD.

Hemp has an amazing ability which is great for the planet, but not so great for CBD lovers. And this ability is why we need to be careful about where the plant is grown. Here at The London Botanists, we only use European farms with the highest standards in ethical, sustainable, organic farming techniques.
That amazing ability? Hemp is able to draw impurities out of the soil – many farmers across the world use it to ‘clean’ their soil of pesticides and chemicals before planting food crops. But this means that impurities in the soil end up in the plant, and therefore in the CBD extract. Which is why it’s vital to ensure our farms have the highest soil standards to start.
